# ZLEXCOUNT

> Count members in lex range.

Use `ZLEXCOUNT` to count the members of a sorted set that fall in a lexicographic range.

Bounds are written as `[member` for inclusive and `(member` for exclusive, with `-` and `+` standing for the lowest and highest possible members, so `ZLEXCOUNT key [a (c` counts members from `a` up to but not including `c`.

Lexicographic ordering only holds when every member of the set has the same score, which is the trick behind using a sorted set as a sorted index of strings; with mixed scores the result is not meaningful. Use [`ZRANGEBYLEX`](/docs/redis/commands/sorted-set/zrangebylex) or [`ZRANGE`](/docs/redis/commands/sorted-set/zrange) with `BYLEX` to retrieve the members themselves.

## Syntax

```redis theme={"system"}
ZLEXCOUNT <key> <min> <max>
```

## Arguments

| Argument | Required | Repeatable | Description                                                                       |
| -------- | -------- | ---------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `<key>`  | Yes      | No         | Redis key targeted by the command.                                                |
| `<min>`  | Yes      | No         | Lexicographic minimum: `-`, `+`, `[member` (inclusive), or `(member` (exclusive). |
| `<max>`  | Yes      | No         | Lexicographic maximum: `-`, `+`, `[member` (inclusive), or `(member` (exclusive). |

## Response

The reply reports the result of the operation. Error replies have the same shape in RESP2 and RESP3 and are surfaced as exceptions by the SDKs below.

## Examples
