# SREM

> Remove members from a set.

Use `SREM` to remove one or more members from a set.

The reply counts only the members that were actually present, so removing something that is already gone is not an error. The key is deleted when its last member is removed, which is why a set that has been fully drained no longer exists rather than existing as an empty set.

## Syntax

```redis theme={"system"}
SREM <key> <member> [<member> ...]
```

## Arguments

| Argument   | Required | Repeatable | Description                        |
| ---------- | -------- | ---------- | ---------------------------------- |
| `<key>`    | Yes      | No         | Redis key targeted by the command. |
| `<member>` | Yes      | Yes        | Member name.                       |

## Response

The reply reports the result of the operation. Error replies have the same shape in RESP2 and RESP3 and are surfaced as exceptions by the SDKs below.

| Protocol | Reply   |
| -------- | ------- |
| RESP2    | Integer |
| RESP3    | Integer |

<Note>
  Client libraries often decode bulk strings, maps, sets, and numeric strings into language-native values. The table describes the Redis wire reply.
</Note>

## Examples

TCP examples use the TLS `REDIS_URL` from the Upstash console. REST examples use `UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_URL` and `UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_TOKEN`.
